Question 1

What temperature should I set my cold plunge to?

Accepted Answer

For most people, 8 to 12°C is the sweet spot for recovery and performance. Professional athletes may choose colder, but we recommend easing in gradually as your tolerance builds.

Question 2

How long should a session last?

Accepted Answer

3 to 6 minutes is enough for excellent benefits. Experienced users may extend to 10 to 12 minutes, but consistency matters more than duration.

Question 3

Do I still need ice if I have a chiller?

Accepted Answer

No. Our chillers hold your chosen temperature with precision. Ice is only needed if you want to push below typical recovery levels.

Question 4

Does the plunge come with a cover?

Accepted Answer

Yes. Every Odyssey cold plunge includes a lockable, weatherproof cover.

Question 5

How quickly does the water cool?

Accepted Answer

Typically 5 to 8°C per hour, depending on water volume and conditions around the plunge.

Question 6

Can the plunge be installed indoors?

Accepted Answer

Yes, provided the room is well ventilated. The chiller releases warm air, so avoid enclosed spaces.

Question 7

Can the plunge be installed outdoors?

Accepted Answer

Absolutely. Each plunge is designed for outdoor use, with UV-treated timber and a full weatherproof cover supplied as standard.

Question 8

My chiller sounds like it's trying to start, then cuts out. Is it broken?

Accepted Answer

No, that's normal in very cold conditions. At around 5°C and below, the chiller runs a cold-weather safety mode: it may briefly try to start, then shut down to protect the compressor, pump and pipework. Don't keep retrying the restart. Once temperatures rise, typically above 5 to 6°C, it resumes automatically.

Question 9

Can I turn everything off overnight to save power?

Accepted Answer

No. Turning the system off in freezing conditions significantly increases the risk of freeze damage. Your system relies on continuous circulation: moving water resists freezing, while standing water can freeze, expand and damage pipework and the chiller.

Question 10

Freezing weather is forecast. Could my pipes freeze, and what should I do?

Accepted Answer

If the chiller will run, keep it powered and circulating, which greatly reduces the risk. If temperatures stay below zero and it won't run, drain down instead: turn the unit off, drain the chiller and all external pipework, leave isolation valves open and disconnect hoses where you can.

Question 11

Why won't the heater warm the water in winter?

Accepted Answer

The heating function uses heat pump technology, drawing warmth from the surrounding air rather than generating it like a boiler. When it's very cold there's little heat available, so heating slows, pauses or won't reach the target temperature.

Question 12

Can I use antifreeze or additives?

Accepted Answer

No. Antifreeze and chemical additives can damage internal components and affect water quality, and they void your warranty. Use clean water only.

Question 13

Is freeze damage covered under warranty?

Accepted Answer

No. Damage caused by freezing due to loss of circulation or power isn't covered. If you're unsure how to run your system in cold weather, contact support before making changes. Early advice prevents costly damage.

Question 14

How often should I change the water?

Accepted Answer

With the built-in filtration running, every 4 to 6 weeks suits most home plunges. Commercial sites and heavy domestic use need changing more often, plus a residual sanitiser between changes.

Question 15

Do I need chemicals to keep the water clean?

Accepted Answer

Filtration does the heavy lifting, but it doesn't sanitise on its own. We recommend eco3spa, our oxygen-based water care range, as the residual sanitiser between water changes. Commercial installations with higher throughput need a managed dosing routine. Our water care page covers what to use and how much.

Question 16

How often do the filters need cleaning or replacing?

Accepted Answer

Rinse the pre-filter weekly, wash the paper filter every 3 to 4 weeks, and replace it at least every 2 months. Heavy or commercial use needs replacing sooner. Replacing at least every 2 months is a condition of your warranty.

Question 17

What's the best way to clean the plunge itself?

Accepted Answer

Drain, wipe with a soft cloth and a mild cleaner, then rinse. Avoid abrasive pads and harsh chemicals, which mark the finish.

Question 18

What filtration comes with the plunge?

Accepted Answer

Every Odyssey cold plunge includes a multi-stage filtration unit engineered to keep water clear, safe and low-maintenance. The Odyssey System page explains each stage.

Question 19

Can I add salts or essential oils?

Accepted Answer

We advise against salts, which affect the chiller and filtration, and against essential oils. For the longest product life, stick to clean water and approved sanitisers.

Question 20

How do I look after the cedar timber?

Accepted Answer

Cedar naturally lightens, darkens or silvers with sun and rain, which is normal and doesn't affect the steel construction underneath. Site it under shelter where you can, clean it with a soft cloth and clean water, and inspect every 3 months. Treat with Osmo UV-Protection Oil once the finish looks dry or faded, doing whole boards rather than patches.

Question 21

Electric or wood-fired: which should I choose?

Accepted Answer

Electric is the easier option day to day: set it from the control panel, or from your phone with the WiFi upgrade, and it's ready without any handling of fuel. Wood-fired needs no power supply and gives you a real fire, but it needs a flue, dry wood and time to come up to heat.

Question 22

What power supply does an electric sauna need?

Accepted Answer

It depends on the heater. Smaller heaters run from a dedicated single-phase circuit, while larger commercial sizes usually need three-phase. We confirm what's needed for your chosen heater before install, and our electrician carries out and certifies the connection.

Question 23

What does 'porch on left' or 'porch on right' mean?

Accepted Answer

It's the handing of the cabin: which side the porch and door sit as you look at the sauna. Choose whichever suits your garden and access. Both cost the same, and we hold stock of each.

Question 24

How long does a sauna take to heat up?

Accepted Answer

An electric sauna typically reaches temperature in 30 to 45 minutes, depending on the heater size and the weather. Wood-fired takes longer, and how you lay and feed the fire makes the difference.

Question 25

How much water should I put on the stones?

Accepted Answer

Roughly 80ml at a time on our electric heaters, then let the stones recover their heat before adding more. If water runs straight out of the bottom of the heater, you've used too much at once or the stones aren't hot enough. Flooding the stone bed shortens element life.

Question 26

How do I look after the sauna's timber?

Accepted Answer

Ventilate and dry the sauna after use, and wipe benches and high-contact areas regularly. The black exterior finish is sacrificial and needs repainting periodically with an exterior black barn paint. Never use bleach or aggressive mould chemicals on cedar. Our care and maintenance page covers the full routine.

Question 27

How often do sauna stones need replacing?

Accepted Answer

Inspect them at least annually, more often with heavy use. Remove fragments and replace any that are cracked, crumbling or badly discoloured, and re-stack them so air still flows through the bed.

Question 28

Can you build a sauna to fit my space?

Accepted Answer

Yes. As well as our standard cabins we design, build and install bespoke saunas, from lining an existing room to building the whole structure, for homes, hotels, gyms and spas.

Question 29

How long does a wood-fired hot tub take to heat up?

Accepted Answer

Usually a few hours from cold, depending on the starting water temperature, the outside temperature and how well the fire is going. Keeping the cover on while it heats makes a noticeable difference.

Question 30

Does a wood-fired hot tub need electricity?

Accepted Answer

The tub itself heats purely by fire, so it needs no power supply. Optional extras such as lighting or a filtration pump do need power.

Question 31

What wood should I burn?

Accepted Answer

Dry, well-seasoned hardwood. Wet or unseasoned wood smokes, burns cooler and tars the flue. Never light the stove unless the tub is filled above the top of the firebox.

Question 32

How do I keep the water clean?

Accepted Answer

Change the water regularly, and treat it between changes if you're using it often. Rinse and wipe the tub after draining, and keep the cover on between sessions.

Question 33

What happens in freezing weather?

Accepted Answer

Drain it fully, including pipework and fittings, if freezing weather is forecast and you won't be using it. Leave valves open and hoses disconnected. Never add antifreeze.

Question 34

How will my order be delivered?

Accepted Answer

Delivery method varies by location. Our team will coordinate the best shipping solution for your region.

Question 35

What is the typical delivery timeframe?

Accepted Answer

Delivery times vary by location. Contact our team for lead times to your region.

Question 36

Is installation included?

Accepted Answer

Free professional installation is currently included on all Vulcan sauna orders, where our 2-person team delivers, positions and assembles on site. For cold plunges, white-glove installation is available on request.

Question 37

Will it fit through my doorway?

Accepted Answer

Most of our cold plunges fit through a standard UK doorway. Always check the product dimensions against your access before ordering, and our team can advise. Saunas and hot tubs need clear access to their final position, which we check before delivery.

Question 38

Do you ship internationally?

Accepted Answer

Yes. Odyssey Plunge serves the UK, Europe, Dubai and beyond. For locations outside these regions, we provide tailored shipping solutions.

Question 39

How difficult is installation?

Accepted Answer

A cold plunge arrives pre-assembled: connect the chiller, fill it and plug it in. Saunas and hot tubs are installed by our team, with the electrical work carried out and certified as part of the job.

Question 40

Do you supply gyms, hotels and spas?

Accepted Answer

Yes. We supply and install commercial cold plunges, saunas and water care, with equipment rated for continuous use and a service and maintenance offering behind it.

Question 41

Can you design something bespoke?

Accepted Answer

Yes. We design, build and install bespoke saunas and commercial installations around your space, from lining an existing room to building the whole structure, and we can work to your drawings and programme.

Question 42

What water treatment do commercial sites need?

Accepted Answer

Higher throughput needs a managed routine rather than ad-hoc dosing: a residual sanitiser, regular testing and a logged schedule. Our water care page sets out the commercial approach, and we'll specify it for your site.
