Caring for an Odyssey cold plunge, sauna and hot tub

Care & Maintenance

Built-in filtration and marine-grade steel mean a cold plunge needs little day-to-day attention. The care that matters is the filters, the water, the timber and, above all, how you run it through winter.

Running it through winter

Paper filter (cartridge)

  • Wash every 3 to 4 weeks, more often with heavy or commercial use.
  • Replace at least every 2 months, and sooner if it looks worn or stays discoloured after washing.
  • Busy households and commercial sites will get through filters faster. Replace on condition, not just on the calendar.

Replacing the filter at least every 2 months is a condition of your warranty. See the warranty page for the full terms. Warranty terms.

Pre-filter (hair & debris)

  • Rinse weekly to clear hair, leaves and other particles.
  • A clogged pre-filter restricts flow, which makes the chiller work harder.

Water

  • With the filtration running, water stays clean for several weeks.
  • Change it every 4 to 6 weeks for a home plunge, depending on use and where it sits.
  • Commercial sites and heavy domestic use need changing more often, and a residual sanitiser between changes.

Water treatment is covered in full on our water care page. Water care.

Stainless steel surfaces

  • Wipe with warm soapy water and a soft cloth.
  • Avoid abrasive pads and harsh chemicals, which mark the finish.

Western red cedar timber

Cedar is a natural material, so it changes with sunlight and weather. Warm cedar tones may lighten, darken or silver, and boards weather at different rates. That is normal and does not affect the stainless steel construction underneath.

  • Site the plunge under a canopy, pergola or overhang where you can. Shelter makes the single biggest difference.
  • Keep it clear of roof runoff, guttering and sprinklers, and don't let leaves or soil sit against the timber.
  • Clean with a soft cloth or sponge and clean water, with a mild timber cleaner if needed. No pressure washing, abrasive pads, bleach or harsh chemicals.
  • Inspect every 3 months, and treat preventatively once the finish starts to look dry, faded or worn.
  • For light weathering, clean, dry fully, then apply Osmo UV-Protection Oil per its instructions. Treat whole boards or sections rather than small patches, and test an inconspicuous area first.
  • Where the finish has gone further, sand back to clean, sound timber before refinishing the whole face.
  • Keep the insulated cover on when the plunge isn't in use.

Minor checking, small surface cracks, slight movement and colour variation are normal characteristics of external timber rather than defects.

Ozone filter

  • Needs little day-to-day maintenance.
  • Keep airflow clear around the unit and wipe the outside if it gets dusty.

UV filter

  • Replace the UV lamp every 12 months so it keeps sterilising effectively.
  • Clean the quartz sleeve, where fitted, when you change the lamp.

Surface skimmer

  • Fitted to top-spec models. Empty the basket regularly and keep the opening clear.
  • It catches surface debris before it reaches the pre-filter, so clearing it keeps everything downstream cleaner.

Chiller unit

  • Keep the vents clear of dust and debris so it can breathe.
  • Wipe the casing with a soft cloth.
  • Check hoses and fittings regularly for leaks.

Winter & cold weather

This is the most important section of the year. Your system relies on continuous circulation: moving water resists freezing, while standing water can freeze silently, expand and damage pipework, fittings and the chiller before you see anything wrong.

  • Keep the pump running and the power on 24/7 through cold weather.
  • Don't drain or refill during freezing conditions.
  • The chiller heats using heat pump technology, drawing warmth from the air rather than generating it. When it's very cold there's little heat to draw on, so heating slows or pauses.
  • Below roughly 5°C the unit may refuse to start, or start and then shut down. That is a protective mode, not a fault.
  • Don't keep retrying the restart. Normal operation resumes on its own once temperatures rise, typically above 5 to 6°C.
  • If sub-zero weather is forecast and the chiller will run, leave it powered and circulating.
  • If it won't run, drain down instead: turn it off, drain the chiller and all external pipework, leave isolation valves open and disconnect hoses where you can.
  • Never add antifreeze or chemical additives. Clean water only.

Freeze damage caused by loss of circulation or power is not covered by warranty, and antifreeze or additives void it. If you're unsure, contact support before changing anything.
